Star Wars

May 4, 2012

On May 25, 1977 the original Star Wars movie was released. It quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The original movie was followed by two sequels, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980), and ‘Return of the Jedi’ (1983). In May of 1999 ‘The Phantom Menace’, the first of three prequels, was released. It would be followed on three year intervals with ‘Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Revenge of the Sith’. The six-movie series is the third highest grossing series of all time behind only Harry Potter and the James Bond movies. The success of the movies has led to additional Star Wars films (The Clone Wars and others), animated series, literature, games, and theme park attractions. Star Wars fans celebrate May 4 as Star Wars Day due to a frequently used pun. “May the Force by with you” is one of the most famous lines from the Star Wars movies. When Margaret Thatcher was first elected as Britain’s Prime Minister on May 4, an ad was placed in the London Evening News by her party with the line “May the Fourth Be with You…” An annual organized celebration of Star Wars Day now takes place in Toronto on May 4.
