Derby Background Since 1875 “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”,”The Run for the Roses”, or The Kentucky Derby has been held in Louisville Kentucky. At the original Derby approximately 10,000 fans saw future Hall of Fame trainer Ansel Williamson’s colt Aristides emerge from a field of 15 three-year-old horses as the inaugural winner. Since 1931 the Kentucky Derby has been the first of the Triple Crown races being followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
