Abraham Lincoln secures Republican Nomination

May 18, 1860 at the Republican National Convention, Abraham Lincoln won the nomination on the third ballot, defeating William H. Seward and Salmon P. Chase. Former Democrat Hannibal Hamlin of Maine was nominated for Vice President to balance the ticket. It was Lincoln’s support of protective tariffs that secured Pennsylvania (with their iron interests) putting Lincoln over the top on the third ballot.
